Short form: Fairgrounds
A short story about an amusement park written in five minutes
Editor’s note: Over the next few months, I’ll share some of my short-form fiction with you here, as well as updates on my Kindle Vellas. The following was written during a five-minute writing sprint.
Most vivid amongst the memories of his hometown was the old calliope at the State Fairgrounds.
Closed and rundown, the place was a wreck but somehow the ancient merry-go-round still seemed to shine. The horses gleamed through chipped paint and broken poles in his mind's eye, but there they stood, waiting to give willing children a ride. Even the brass ring could be seen.
Thomas would sneak into the place, ignoring the stop and warning signs. He’d go alone because his friends were too scared. He’d show them.
There was one day he never could forget, even though he wasn’t sure he could trust his memory.
The day the calliope came to life.
