The letters sparkled in diamonds on the little dog’s collar. The letters spelled out CHER. C-H-E-R. It meant expensive in French.
“Don’t even breathe on that,” Sally said to Mark, as his hand hovered over Cher’s head about to inspect the shiny collar.
“How much did you pay for that thing?” asked Mark.
“None of your business,” Sally said. “And besides she is worth every penny.”
“Your obsession with this dog is hovering on the edge of insanity, you know that, right?”
“I know no such thing. Cher is my baby. She’s here for me when you’re not and she loves me unconditionally in a way that nobody does.”
“Well, all I know is if you spent the rent money on that dog again this month I’m leaving.”
“Well go on then. Who needs you around here? You don’t do anything for me anyway. And we’ve got enough money to pay the rent don’t worry about it. But you know what? You should go anyway. I’m sick and tired of hearing your threats about leaving. Why don’t you act on your threats for once and get!”
Mark‘s eyes grew large; he never heard Sally talk like this before. But then he heard something else, like a low rumble. Growing louder and louder.
It was Cher the little Pomeranian, growling.
Sally put the dog down and it started approaching Mark, the growl getting louder - deafening even. And before his eyes - how was this happening? – the dog began to grow larger and larger. Still the shape of a Pomeranian but doubling, tripling quadrupling, more and more and more until the dog was about the size of a Rottweiler.
Big head, big body, and a massive mouth, with sharp teeth dripping in saliva.
“I told you she is special, worth every penny,” Sally said as she thought about Mark’s recently renewed life insurance policy.
Cher lunged, and the dog began to eat.
