Setting your own writing goal
In NaNoWriMo, 50,000 words is just a number. Here's what I do.
We are three weeks into National Novel Writing Month, the annual event where writers around the world commit to writing a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. But I’m not writing 50,000 words.
I’m writing a 35,000-word novella. Maybe more, maybe less. And you know what? That’s OK. Here’s four things to think about:
Know Your Limits
Life doesn’t pause in November. Work, family, and other responsibilities don’t magically disappear.Focus on Consistency
Rather than obsessing over the total word count, I aim for daily progress. Whether it’s 500 words, a detailed outline, or just revising a scene, the act of showing up matters most.Celebrate Every Milestone
Writing is hard work, and every word adds up. Celebrate the small victories, like finishing a chapter or solving a plot issue.Give Yourself Grace
Some days, the words flow; other days, they don’t. And that’s OK. Writing is about quality, growth, and joy.
Remember, NaNoWriMo is a tool, not a rule. If 50,000 words motivates you, go for it! But if a different goal serves your creativity better, embrace it. The most important thing is to keep writing and enjoy the journey.
So, what’s your goal this NaNoWriMo? Let’s make this month about progress, not perfection.
